One Hundred Days: Day Twenty
Healing is hard work when you want things to move along beyond the status quo. I remember a Doctor saying to a friend…. if you are not going to work at it (healing), then I am not your Doctor!
In actual fact healing is a team activity, as there are often quite a few support people, some more prominent than others but all important in what they contribute.
Managing medications is mind boggling especially when unanticipated side effects come into play. and what really does “as needed” mean? How about “don’t let pain get ahead of the curve”…. how much is too little and how much too much? When does pain take control and when are you controlling pain?
Medication mismanagement is a leading cause of hospitalization and there are statistics to prove this. I can well believe this as several times in the week after my ankle surgery I was at a total loss.
However, I have an amazing person on my support team, Marge who owns our local pharmacy with her husband pharmacist Rick. She is accessible by email (unlike the staff at the Orthopedic center) and her help in understanding what the medications were, did and how to use them effectively was very helpful. Medication management, there should be an app for that. However, how would you customize it for the recipient as Marge does; because I am a longtime customer where she has taken care of all my medication needs for years.
Cheaper online……well I’d rather pay for the customer service, because when you need help…. you really need it. You often can find some of the answers online…..but many answers are subject to interpretation!
Conclusion: You drive your own healing schedule but it’s a lot less stressful with a capable support team.
Challenging: the adaptive Tai Chi, five exercises, nine-times each exercise was challenging this morning! But I did them all!
